Strong sense of familyamong the parishioners, which creates a community of caring and support and prayer. Ardent commitment ot Outreach. Youth program based on Journey to Adulthood is well developed and the church school program in general is a strong draw to families with children. Worship is well attended and there is a depth of participation in both planning and participation by the laity.
Challenges: The possibility of growth threatens to undo the family feeling and presents challenges to the worship space, so there is ambivalence about growth, evanglism and mission. Stewardship is narrowly defined. Financial pledging is weak overall.

Strengths: St. Mark’s is a spiritually grounded community of caring believers that continues to grow in numbers and service to others. We are financially sound and have a strong commitment to stewardship. We are sensitive to the needs of the communities of thegreater North East Kingdom, and dedicated to community outreach. We are strong in pastoral care and are passionately supportive of mutual ministry through lay participation in preaching, a thriving Sunday school program, lay visitation, and all of our other outreach and community ministries including a food shelf, the Tuesday "Souper Lunch", and PINS. The voice of God acting through the people of Saint Mark’s can be heard and seen every day of the year.
Challenges: So what is God up to here at St. Mark’s? And how do we move forward with that? Our continuing challenge is to nourish our existing church community and to grow it by our commitment to Christ’s admonition to reach out to the world and share His love with others and welcome them into our church family. An important part of our mutual lay ministry is an active Covenant group (also called a Baptismal ministry) which has been in existence for over two years. It is our prayer that this group wi

Strengths: St Mary’s is a congregation of 50-60 caring and talented folks with the feel of a committed family (no matter the age 6-96 you’re included and loved). We have a strong faith; love to worship; support both financially and physically as well as participate in church-family life. Our tradition of modified Anglo-Catholic liturgy (bells, good music, a historic 1830 tracker organ, incense) is wedded to an informal & friendly group of folk (why, we even have a dog in our weekly worship.) People who attend are often involved with Northfield community activities. A beautiful Church, a practical Parish Hall, and a period Rectory-St Mary’s is a Parish with a sense of place located in a beautiful town in proximity to the Norwich University campus. St Mary’s tries to help all to feel welcome and be spiritually enriched and educated. There is a small town feel with a big town attitude-“We can do and accomplish anything we choose." A well educated congregation not easily swallowed concerns.
Challenges: The lack of families and absence of a Church school stymie church growth. Challenged to discover new ways to participate in community involvement. Finding common mission with the 4 Episcopal churches within a 15 mile radius. We are aging and shrinking and need to find new ways to grow. Effective parish-wide communication. New methods and energy to welcome and incorporate newcomers. Maintaining and growing our tradition of Sacramental Life and music. Maintaining our physical plant.
Comments: Priority: Pastor - nurture and equip for growth; Preacher - make the Gospel relevant to our lives. Encouraging Growth to reshape, redevelop, restart Ministry to Youth; Spiritual Guidance; Music.

BETHESDA, MD
ST. JOHN'S CHURCH
Listed: 08/22/08  Updated: 12/14/09
Position: Rector
Full Time
Status: No Longer Receiving Names
Strengths: Outstanding lay leadership in the congregation and shared with the diocese, commitment to transformative outreach, well educated, progressive congregation with healthy and holy expectations of their leaders and a commitment to practice their faith daily, undertaken capital improvements including a new organ that are paid for, an effective strategic plan and mission and solid footing as a program-sized congregation.
Challenges: At a crossroads between being a neighborhood and a destination church. Have the capacity with respect to program and ministry to become a resource sized congregation, but that may not be the congregation's desire. In spite of far-sighted attempts to secure more property in the adjacent shopping center, the basic building foot print is the limit of their building capacity for the moment.

A number of county leaders are members of the vestry and leaders in the church. Facilities are in excellent condition. Very real care and attention paid to children. Expressed openness to shared ministry with other congregations, but no plan has emerged for this. Thrift store is a ministry in many ways and especially supports excellent outreachwork. Sense of being part of the diocese and the larger church.
Challenges: Two worship locations, one parish, vestry. Struggling to preserve "family feel" while in transition from family to pastoral sized. Conflict with previous priest-in-charge over change. This time reentering search with an interim who knows the region well, as well as their strengths and challenges.

WASHINGTON

Strengths: Highly educated, progressive membership drawn from the Capitol Hill neighborhood around the congregation, strong commitment to outreach in the Capitol Hill area and social justice ministries in the parish and diocese, undertaken significant capital improvements in the building and grounds that have enhanced program, strong lay leadership and volunteers, solid budget with no debt.
Challenges: Holding onto families with children in a highly transient area and with many competing activies for involvement; they are the closest Episcopal church in the vicinity of a huge redevelopment effort around the old Navy Yard and this has real implications for congregational growth if this is the desire of the congregation.

ST. MARY MAGDALENE
Listed: 11/05/08  Updated: 10/13/09

Strengths: Long commitment to being a diverse congregation (over 40 years); just completed a small and highly successful capital campaign; genuine commitment to evangelism and growth; involved in strategic planning and revitalizing their mission; a suburban area that has maintained its growth and stability amid a soft housing market; exploring ministry to Spanish speakers.
Challenges: Growing the level of annual giving; finding the financial support for new ministries such as Spanish-speaking ministry; continuing the momentum of revitalization during the interim;anxiety over undertaking search process only six years after the last call.
Comments: The rector has accepted a call as the interim dean of a cathedral in another diocese. This is a solid, healthy congregation that is hoping for a new rector who would grow with them.

Both have active lay people waiting for the right clergy leadership to help them focus and continue to grow. Some growth in the last two years. Mt. Zion's endowment.
Challenges: Serving a new yoke which has shared an interim for 2 1/2 yrs and are still growing in what that relationship means. Mt. Zion's endowment !
Comments: Discovered from their self-study ( Holy Cow!) how bad their stewardship was. Did a renewed campaign with some improvement. This is an area which can be cultivated further.

Challenges: Small town not near any growth. Concern about money, even with endowment. Need someone to help them envision what it is to which God is calling them.
Comments: Lots of potential for community outreach and use of facilities for ministry. Need someone to lead them in vision and renew energy. Good and faithful laborers.

MORGANTOWN
TRINITY
Listed: 09/05/09  Updated: 03/03/10
Position: Full Time
Status: No Longer Receiving Names
Strengths: Trinity is located in the middle of downtown Morgantown, right in the midst of West Va. Univ activity. They have college ministry with a part-time college minister (lay). The parish sponsors a strong feeding program for those struggling economically. The leadership is tenacious and faithful. Significant missionary work at home and abroad.
Challenges: Rector of 17 yrs. retired, having lost members who were concerned that he was too conservative and members who believed he was not conservative enough, leaving a moderately conservative congregational base. Relationship with the diocese has been strained, even though Bishop Klusmeyer is himself a centrist conservative. College ministry has been fairly conservative evangelical. Financially, they are struggling, but had a good stewardship campaign in the Fall.
Comments: Will take a seasoned priest, spiritually-centered, who is comfortable with both evangelical and broad-church traditions. There is opportunity here for re-growth and increased college ministry.

Strengths: Very strong outreach & witness to declining neighborhood, which they have not abandoned. Diversity in ages. Strong youth presence. On survey, their Spirituality index is high. Larger facility. Many active and dedicated laity. Good secretary/administrator.
Challenges: Need someone to help them revision the future following a larger-than-life rector of 28 years. Identified area of need is to work on improving worship and music. Although they need a financial stewardship push, their % giving is above national ave.
Comments: Would be helpful if new rector had some transition training. Following a long rectorate, not all the transitional work will be done by interim. This is a bed-rock parish in the diocese.
